Supply of E20 petrol started in India, now preparations are being made to mix Isobutanol in Diesel

E20 Petrol supply nationwide: Government implemented 20% ethanol mix petrol, now work on isobutanol blending in diesel is being accelerated.

E20 Petrol Supply: India achieved the target ahead of schedule

The Government of India has started E20 petrol supply across the country. This fuel consists of a mixture of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol. After starting at select petrol pumps in April 2023, it was implemented across India by April 2025. The government has achieved this feat before the set deadline of 2030.

Preparation for Isobutanol Blending in Diesel

Now the government is moving towards eco-friendly changes in diesel as well. However, ethanol will not be added directly to it but isobutanol, which is made from ethanol itself. Earlier, an experiment was done to mix 10% ethanol in diesel, but it was not successful. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said that now experiments are going on with isobutanol blending in diesel.

Effect on Pollution and Oil Import

Blending isobutanol in E20 petrol and diesel will reduce the country’s oil imports and will also help in pollution control. Ethanol made from sugarcane, maize and rice is a big step towards green energy along with giving additional income to farmers.

Challenges and Industry Reaction

In view of the concerns of vehicle owners and service centers, the government has clarified that the fear of excess ethanol affecting the engine is baseless. The Supreme Court has also rejected the petitions filed on this subject.
